lone womam of blue dolphin island

the woman who spend her 18 years alone in island

Her nickname is Juana Maria. Despite the fact that nobody ever knew her real name, Nicole, she served as the inspiration for Karana in The Island of the Blue Dolphins. She suffered 18 years of alone on a small, uninhabited island 60 miles off the coast of California.

The last remaining Nicoleo people were relocated from San Nicolas Island in 1835 for unclear reasons, however they may have something to do with the mission-related operations that were common in early California history. The woman was mistakenly left behind when the ship sailed away.

Until 1853, when George Nidiver visited the island and found her, she remained there by herself, uncommunicated, and alone. He brought her back to Santa Barbara with him.

She was also the last person to speak her tribe's language and be a living member of it.
