Laghima Siddhi: What is it?
Laghima Siddhi, as described by Patanjali, is the spiritual capacity to momentarily render one's physical body so light that it can float in the air practically weightlessly. When fully learned and combined with mastery of the five elements, it is supposed to bestow the ability to fly on one's own initiative. It alters the interaction between the body and the natural rules of the outside world rather than changing the body itself (in this case gravity). Its gift of flight is not lift- and propulsion-based aerodynamic flight, but rather the ability to move freely through wide-open spaces while defying gravity and exerting supernatural control over the air itself.
Some strategies are reported to be used to develop Laghima Siddhi.
Yoga, meditation—particularly Samyama meditation, which combines Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi and is centred on the Vishuddha Chakra and a few other elemental principles—pranayama, and other Sadhanas are claimed to be necessary for the development of Laghima Siddhi. The Puranas (the Devi Bhagavata Purana goes into particularly great length), Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and other early yoga books all describe laghima siddhi.
