Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. He was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Terry Fox is best known for his Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run he embarked on in 1980 to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Fox had lost his right leg to bone cancer at the age of 18 and was inspired to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He began his Marathon of Hope in St. John's, Newfoundland, on April 12, 1980, with the goal of running the equivalent of a marathon every day until he reached the Pacific Ocean in British Columbia.
Despite encountering numerous obstacles along the way, including harsh weather conditions and a recurrence of his cancer, Fox continued his run for 143 days, covering over 5,300 kilometers. The Marathon of Hope captured the attention of Canadians and people around the world, and Fox's determination and courage inspired millions.
